The most common liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) in use today rely on picture elements, or pixels, formed by liquid-crystal (LC) cells that change the polarization direction of light passing through them in response to an electrical voltage.

As the polarization direction changes, more or less of the light is able to pass through a polarizing layer on the face of the display. Change the voltage, and the amount of light is changed.

There are two ways to produce a liquid-crystal image with such cells: the segment driving method and the matrix driving method.
The segment driving method displays characters and pictures with cells defined by patterned electrodes.

The matrix driving method displays characters and pictures in sets of dots.

History of Plasma Television

First prototype for a plasma display monitor was invented in 1964
The very first prototype for a plasma display monitor was invented in July 1964 at the University of Illinois by professors Donald Bitzer and Gene Slottow, and then graduate student Robert Willson. However, it was not until after the advent of digital and other technologies that successful plasma televisions became possible. According to Wikepedia "a plasma display is an emissive flat panel display where light is created by phosphors excited by a plasma discharge between two flat panels of glass."
During the early sixties, the University of Illinois used regular televisons as computer monitors for their in-house computer network. Donald Bitzer, Gene Slottow, and Robert Willson (the inventors listed on the plasma display patent) researched plasma displays as an alternative to the cathode-ray tube-based televisions sets being used. A cathode-ray display has to constantly refresh, which is okay for video and broadcasts but bad for displaying computer graphics. Donald Bitzer began the project and enlisted the help of Gene Slottow and Robert Willson. By July of 1964, the team had built the first plasma display panel with one single cell. Today's plasma televisions use millions of cells.
After 1964, television broadcast companies considered developing plasma television as an alternative to televisions using cathode ray tubes. However, LCD or liquid crystal displays made possible flat screen television that squelched the further commercial development of plasma display. It took many years for plasma televisons to became successful and they finally did due to the efforts of Larry Weber. University of Illinois author Jamie Hutchinson wrote that Larry Weber's prototype sixty inch plasma display, developed for Matsushita and bearing the Panasonic label, combined the size and resolution necessary for HDTV with the addition of thinness.

Computer Hardware

Computer hardware is the physical part of a computer, including the digital circuitry, as distinguished from the computer software that executes within the hardware. The hardware of a computer is infrequently changed, in comparison with software and data, which are "soft" in the sense that they are readily created, modified or erased on the computer. Firmware is a special type of software that rarely, if ever, needs to be changed and so is stored on hardware devices such as read-only memory (ROM) where it is not readily changed (and is, therefore, "firm" rather than just "soft").
Most computer hardware is not seen by normal users. It is in embedded systems in automobiles, microwave ovens, electrocardiograph machines, compact disc players, and other devices. Personal computers, the computer hardware familiar to most people, form only a small minority of computers (about 0.2% of all new computers produced in 2003).

R2-D2 for home.

I stumbled upon at Van's Tech Shop oneday, and i remembered this cool toy. Looks like R2-D2 is the most popular character from Star Wars when it comes to merchandise, with Darth Vader coming in a close second.

Everybody's favorite droid has been given the shrinking ray treatment, turning him into a miniature R2-D2 action figure that can be ordered around courtesy of a lightsaber-shaped remote control. This tiny terror even comes with his signature swiveling head and red LED to please the insatiable appetites of Star Wars fans.

At Rp.250.000,- a pop, I don't see any reason not to pick this up, never mind that your paycheck is still a couple of weeks away and the next bonus is still 5 months off.

Think Vision L171 by Lenovo

I’m pretty sure that at this point there is not a single person who has not used a computer. I knew when I bought my latest monitor, ThinkVision L171, that it would function more as a “cinema” than as a screen. Its impressive, huge screen was attractive to me.

The ThinkVision L171 has decent display quality, however only has an analog input and does not include many extras; it is just a basic 17–inch LCD monitor. It does not have speakers but you can buy a ThinkVision USB soundbar and attach it if desired. Like the other monitors in this review, it has a native resolution of 1280X1024. It includes 20 user programmable modes, which is more than most, and is pretty fast with a vertical refresh rate of 75 kHz and a slower horizontal refresh rate of 30 kHz. As far as design aesthetics, it does have a very thin bezel, the monitor only measures 14.4 inches across yet has a full 17 inches of diagonal.

Technical support is provided by telephone for the United States, unfortunately they do not have email support unless you purchase in China. They do provide an email address for the US but it is for non–technical questions. On their webpage, they post that orders ship within one to three weeks, which seems like a long time to wait.

Overall, this is a standard monitor and does not include any features that would distinguish it from its competitors !
